City sends 'slow down' letter to Heritage Meadows, not behind postcard By STEVE SNYDER Examiner editor Per the will of the Navasota City Council, Heritage Meadows residents are getting a "slow down" letter. The Navasota Police Department has sent out a letter to Heritage Meadows residents informing them they will be stepping up enforcement of the speed limit on Mockingbird Street. At its June 14 meeting, the council opted for that approach, combined with eventually installing one or more "Children at Play" signs, rather than installing speed bumps. The letter to residents was suggested by local restaurant owner Harry Davis, who is also a resident of that area. The council also plans to lower the speed limilt in the entire development to 20mph. At the June 14 meeting, it had discussed during that Just on Mockingbird, then City Manager Brad Stafford decided to add Heritage Drive to an ordinance for the June 25 meeting. Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt suggested standarizing the speed limit for all streets there. Because the ordinance was not written that way, it will have to be considered at a July city council meeting. At the same time, the police department, or other city staff, are not behind a postcard mailing that is piggybacking on their official letter. The postcard, mailed from Bryan, references a Navasota resident who works at Bryan's Planned Parenthood office. Playing off last week's Examiner story, it looks at first like it could be the official city mailing. In fact, Myatt said that was the first reaction of a couple of his officers when he showed them the mailing. He stressed that the city had nothing to do with that mailing, and that the official city letter is on city letterhead and is letter-sized. Correction from last week's story: Land owned by Pete and Maureen Yorek on the city's north side was NOT rezoned: instead, it was decided to give the Yoreks a certificate of occupancy to allow non-conforming use in the current zoning classification.
