Plans are under way for this year's annual Martin Luther King Day Parade, scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 17, with the parade lineup to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

The parade will begin at the church and conclude at the Carver Resource Center on South LaSalle Street.

All churches are invited to enter a float or a decorated car or truck and participate in the parade.

A brief program will be held on the steps of the Carver Gym following the parade, including a wreath-laying ceremony. After the ceremony, an all-community program will be held at the Grimes County Fairgrounds with a meal scheduled at 1 p.m. and activities to follow.

“This year we pause to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said event coordinator James Harris in a letter to all area pastors. “He dared to fight for justice and equality at a time when it was dangerous for African Americans to even think about equality. Let us show our appreciation for his bravery and great achievements by working to accomplish his dream.”
