The 2018 Navasota MLK Day celebration will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, in remembrance of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As one of the most visibly civil rights leaders, Dr. King was instrumental in the advancement of equal rights for all citizens. His memory will be honored Saturday during a day full of events in Navasota, beginning with a parade at 9 a.m. Parade participants will line-up at Brosig Ave and the parade route will travel west along Washington Ave. before turning south along LaSalle and ending at the G.W. Carver Center.

A memorial program will follow the parade in Carver Gym with a keynote address by Frank Jackson.

“Jackson is a highly-acclaimed historian and the former mayor of the city of Prairie View,” said Peggy Johnson with the city of Navasota.

Jackson’s speech will be followed by other performances from area musicians, dancers and speakers. There will be food and merchant vendors on the Carver Center grounds.

All churches, businesses, organizations, city and county officials, motorcycle groups, horse riding clubs and citizens are invited to participate in the parade and attend the invents. For additional information, contact Kay Peavy at 936-419-9341 or Johnson at 936-577-3301 or any other City Wide Mission Board Member. Area schools and many businesses will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
