VFW Post 4006 has long been a gathering place for veterans and their families. This Christmas season it will also be a place to remember those who have fallen, with the addition of a Fallen Heroes Tree.

“We want anyone in the community who wishes to remember a fallen veteran or first responder to come in to the post and fill out an ornament,” said VFW Post 4006 Commander Carl Dry.

Visitors can take a paper in the shape of a butterfly, dove, angel’s wings or star and write the name of their hero, service dates or other information on the ornament before placing it on the tree. The tree is lit with red, blue and white lights as a subtle reminder of the country and department that the individuals have given their life to defend.

“We didn’t put many ‘decorative ornaments’ on the tree, or even many lights,” said Dry. “We want the tree to be filled with those we need to remember this Christmas.”

Standing nearly to the ceiling of the post, the tree had more than 20 ornaments after just one week of display and the numbers continue to grow. Each ornament had a unique narrative of the life it looks to honor.

“In honor of Napoleon Lambert, WWII, U.S. Army,” read one butterfly.

A dove had the words from a loved one, “Navy Seal David L. West, love of my life.”

The post encourages anyone to come view the tree, even if they do not have a name to place on an ornament.

“To see the names and read the small stories on the ornaments is to put a face to those who have fallen,” said Dry. “The post is an active veteran community, but the public is always welcome.”

Donations are not required to place an ornament on the tree but are deeply appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Sgt. Griffith Foundation to purchase and operate facilities to house homeless veterans within the area.

For more information or to place an ornament on the Fallen Hero tree, go to VFW Post 4006, 1575 W. Washington Ave in Navasota, or call 936-825-3666.
