IOLA — Iola Board of Trustees accepted Superintendent Dr. Michael “Chad” Jones resignation Tuesday night, so that he may assume the lead position at Sinton ISD.

“My contract with Sinton is scheduled to begin July 1, but I am heading to the (Sinton) board meeting tonight to sign the contract,” Jones said Monday afternoon. “I will be in Iola June 28 and June 29 to wrap everything up, but will be taking a few vacation days in the meantime.”

Jones has been the superintendent of Iola Independent School District for the past five years and had previously been an assistant principal and principal with College Station ISD and Rockdale ISD and the superintendent at West Hardin County ISD.

“Iola has been amazing and it has been a great five years,” said Jones. “I am leaving behind good people and good friends.”

The Sinton board hired Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services in March and met with staff and community groups in April to discuss the qualities that were needed in the new superintendent. Jones was one of six candidates pulled from a pool of more than 50 applicants. Sinton ISD named Jones the lone finalist in their superintendent search during their May board meeting, but had to wait the mandated 21 days to officially hire Jones.

Sinton ISD is in San Patricio County, just 30 miles north of Corpus Christi. The district has an enrollment of 2,100-plus students in two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school campus.

“Going from a 500-student district to a 2,100-student district will bring its own challenges,” said Jones. “But I am looking forward to this next step.”

The Iola ISD board of trustees met Tuesday night to discuss candidates for the superintendent position, but details of their decision was not available at press time.
