1937 – 2017

Shirley Ann Hempel, 80, of Navasota, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, at CHI St. Joseph Healthcare in Bryan, Texas.

A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Nobles Funeral Chapel, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. The Rev. Katy Ware will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.

Shirley was born Sept. 7, 1937, in Marshall, Minnesota, to Leonard and Bernice (Heinis) Breyfogle. A loving, generous woman by nature, she loved volunteering and serving others in need. Naturally, she would choose a field of service in which to work and thrive in, and she spent several years working for the American Red Cross in administrative support. She also enjoyed serving the Grimes St. Joseph hospital volunteer staff as a Pink Lady.

Shirley enjoyed reading, canning and quilting, but her favorite thing in all the world was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley was a member of Lynn Grove United Methodist Church.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and John Shine of Navasota and Nancee and David Henke of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; son, Dan Hempel of Crestwood, Kentucky; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Dan Svoboda of Scottsdale, Arizona; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Debbie Breyfogle of Rockford, Minnesota, John B. Breyfogle of Minnetonka, Minnesota and Doug and Judy Breyfogle of Little Falls, Minnesota; grandchildren, Traci Colbert and husband Brian, Jenifer Shine, Laura Williams and husband Ben, Amber Jester and husband Kenny, Tyler Crowder and wife Jennifer, and Rachel Hempel and Danielle Hempel; great-grandchildren, Austin Shine, Lillie, Beaux and Cash Colbert, Gavin Williams and Wesley Jester; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Carroll G. Hempel; and brother, Richard (Dick) Breyfogle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Lynn Grove United Methodist Church, 16402 CR 419, Navasota, TX 77868; CHI Grimes St. Joseph Pink Ladies; or the American Red Cross in LaGrange, Kentucky.
