The #6 ranked Navasota Lady Rattlers (15-0) continued its great season, with another undefeated week of basketball. Navasota reeled off six wins in five days against top-notch competition, and won its second tournament of the season by winning the 17th annual Rattler Shoot Out Classic.

Since its inaugural debut in 2011, the host Lady Rattlers have won the Rattler Shoot Out Classic 13 of the tournament’s 17-year existence. Navasota has compiled an impressive 84-6 record while hosting the tournament, including a 5-0 record this year.

Navasota kicked off the tournament with a milestone game for head coach Tommy Gates. The Lady Rattlers took to the court against last year’s tournament champion Waller, and Coach Gates took his place on the sideline, prepared to coach his 1,000th career-game.

The Lady Rattlers paced by Ke'aundra Eddings with 20-points, defeated the Lady Bulldogs 48-39. During his 30-year coaching career beginning in 1985, Gates boasts a 751-253 record.

"It just means I've been doing this a long time, but I can still remember the very first game I coached as a head coach way back in November of 1985,” said Gates. “My team played really well, but we lost. In fact, we started off 0-5 before we finally won. 1985 seems like just yesterday. Time does fly by.”

Navasota overcame sloppy play to win its second game on Thursday over 5A Austin Crockett 38-30. The Lady Rattlers picked up another pair of wins Friday over 6A LaPorte 65-28 and 5A Lumberton 61-47.

On Saturday the Lady Rattlers took down 4A Hillsboro 61-29.

Austin Crockett finished in second place with a 3-2 record, followed by Waller 3-2, Lumberton 2-3, Hillsboro 2-3 and LaPorte 0-5.

“This was one of the better tournament fields that we have had. One 6A, three 5A and two 4A schools made for a nice mix,” said Gates. “Teams were very well coached and for the most part the games were very competitive.”

Navasota began the week Tuesday with a win over Bellville 60-27. The Lady Rattlers, possibly still feeling the effects from a Thanksgiving feast, started slow but ended fast in the win.

A step slow on defense, and sluggish offensively, the Lady Rattlers led by just 10 points at the half 24-14.

Navasota exploded in the third period with 7-2 and 6-0 runs during the first four minutes, and cruised to a 60-27 victory.

Eddings recorded a triple-double with 13-points, 13-assists and 10-steals. Malaiya Jedkins followed with a double-double. Jedkins had 12-points and 10-steals.

The Lady Rattlers forced Bellville to commit 33-turnovers, and outrebounded the Lady Brahmas 39-18.

Sha’Diamon King led Navasota grabbing nine-rebounds, and Alyssia Thomas crashed the boards pulling down eight.

Navasota will get a little rest before competing in the Rice Consolidated tournament this weekend.
