Iola advances in playoffs

PALESTINE — The Iola Bulldogs took on the Mount Enterprise Wildcats in Palestine on Friday, Nov. 17, for their first playoff game and moved to the next round with a win of 51-0.

Iola started off the game by receiving the ball first, and running-back Chris Holmes scored to put the Bulldogs on the board. The extra point by kicker JD Funderburk was good, putting Iola up 7-0.

Later in the quarter, running-back Tyler Dykes scored on a fake handoff up the right side, putting the Bulldogs up 14-0 with the extra point. At the end of the first quarter, defensive end Dylan Riojas caused and recovered a fumble, turning the ball over to Iola. Middle linebacker Colton Renick ran it in for a touchdown, and with the extra point, Iola upped their score to 21-0 over Mount Enterprise.

“It always feels good to win the first round game,” Riojas said. “It makes all the nerves go away for the next round. I think we have a pretty good shot at winning on Friday against Maud, and we just have to stay focused and stick to the plan our coaches give us.”

In the second quarter, Dykes scored a touchdown on a read option, but the extra point was blocked, making the score 27-0 Iola. In Mount Enterprise’s next possession, Riojas had another fumble recovery. At the end of the quarter, quarterback Zack Dyer scored on a quarterback keeper. The extra point was good, putting Iola up 34-0. The Bulldogs weren’t able to do anything else in the second quarter.

In the third, free-safety Kody McKnight caught an interception, but the Bulldogs weren’t able to score a touchdown on the attempt. The field goal by Funderburk was good, making the new score 37-0.

Later in the quarter, free-safety Andrew Crenshaw scored on a pick-six, and the extra point was good, putting the Bulldogs up 44-0. Dykes recovered a fumble during Mount Enterprise’s next possession, and Dyer ran it in for a touchdown. With the extra point, the new score was 51-0 Iola.

Lineman Ryan Lawrence stated, “It felt really good to win the fame, but we can’t stay focused on it because in the playoffs, every game could be our last.”

The fourth quarter was scoreless, and the final score of the game was 51-0 Iola.

The next game for the Iola Bulldogs is at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Palestine High School  against Maud High School.
