Navasota grad receives football honor

Solomon McGinty has been recognized for his football play.

The Liberty University linebacker has been named to the all-Big South Conference second team. The Navasota High School graduate was honored for the first time during his two years at Liberty.

The team captain, who competed two years for Tyler Junior College, finished with 51 tackles in starting all 10 games he played. He had two interceptions, one fumble recovery and half a sack.

More football

Senior linebacker Jaylyin Minor finished the season as University of Cincinnati's leading tackler. The Navasota product had 15 tackles during a win over University of Connecticut in the season finale, leading players from both squads. In 12 games (4-8), he had 125 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. As of Nov. 28, he led the American Athletic Conference with 10.4 tackles per game.

Baylor University offensive lineman Michael Coffey had to medically retire, according to Sharon Coffey, his mother. The past Rattler did not complete the season as a player but was a student assistant coach helping with the offensive line. On game days he assisted the offensive coordinator in the press box, she said.

Men's basketball

Freshman Jabril Hunter led Wilberforce University with 10 rebounds against Brescia. The former Rattler had seven points, two assists and one blocked shot.


Women's basketball

Alcorn State University point guard Alexus Freeman had 24 points and tied her career high of eight assists against Stephen F. Austin. The Navasota graduate added five rebounds and had five steals for a second consecutive game.

Iola High alumna Megan Haby of Concordia University Texas had two rebounds against Southwestern.

Junior Denisha Ford had one assist for Rogers State University against Southern Nazarene. She played for Navasota.
