2011 Navasota graduate Rodney Brown, who's now a freshman at LSU, threw a personal record in the shot put Sunday with a 55-1.50 (16.80m) to take 7th place and score 2 points for the Tigers in the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Kentucky. Brown was a two-time state champ for NHS in the discus in 2010 and 2011.
Brown also qualified for state in the shot put, but finished ninth in Class 3A that day. The throws happened several hours after he’d won the discus title. The shot in college is 4 pounds heavier than in high school.
Brown is throwing the discus about 190 feet heading into the outdoor season, and he could get an invitation to this summer’s Olympic Trials if he gains another 10-15 feet on his throws.
