Cardiospermum halicacabum and other plants in the Cardiospermum genus, Cardiospermum spp. are called balloon vine, love in a puff and heartseed. In Mexico they’re called farolitos, little lanterns. These names refer to the 1-inch papery balloon or lantern-like puffy hollow fruits or pods, first green and then brown. Inside are three sections, each with one black seed that has a white spot in the shape of a heart. Cardiospermum is the combination of the Latin words cardio, meaning heart, and sperma, meaning seed. Sometimes the white mark on the seed looks more like the yin-yang symbol. Fragrant white flowers are small with four petals. The plant is a thin vine, up to 10 feet. Leaves consist of three leaflets and each of those have three leaflets. In warm areas such as Grimes County, balloon vine is a perermiaL On the same vine may be flowers and green and brown pods.

Huge shout out to the Richards Civic Club and Richards Volunteer Fire Department for their smiles and willingness to not let 2020 spoil the Halloween fun every Richards community member deserves!

Read moreThe Zinnia genus, in the daisy family, has many species native to Central and South America and the American Southwest. Depending on the variety, you may have seen them in Grimes County gardens almost year-round except during the coldest days of winter. Usually on a single 10 to 12-inch upright stem, they come in a variety of colors though the ones I’ve seen have been various shades of yellow, red, and purple. Some have a single color. Some are mixed. Some have a single row of blooms and some have more. Opposite leaves are sessile, clinging to the stem. Named for German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727 - 1759), zinnias are often seen in cut flower arrangements.
