The Freedom Parade in Navasota was good. It was nice to see people not only in the parade but also there to watch the celebration. Paige, Chucky and I decided to come home afterwards but later regretted not staying for the fireworks. Pictures on Facebook looked like it was a fun time. Yes, Mayor Charlie was riding in the “memo” and waving to the crowds. Paige and I crossed the median to get a close picture and also to support him. Children on bikes show true respect for the “American Way”.

The Fourth of July was celebrated with a large celebration at the Iola Community Center Sunday evening. Hotdogs, watermelon and other goodies were served to a large group of Iola citizens. The food was good, and the fireworks were enjoyed after dark. At least 100 people attended. It is not often the holiday falls on a Sunday. Last year there was not a celebration because of coronavirus.

Winner number 46 of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church 52-week gun raffle was drawn Sunday, July 11. The winner of a Glock G43X, 9mm is Gene Bohack. The next drawing will take place Sunday, July 18. We start the week by announcing key wins in Richards. Tyler Calhoun, age 15, competed in the National High School Rodeo Finals in Lincoln, Nebraska July 18- 24 and earned Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA) Reserve Champion Tie Down Roper. He is the son of Poppa and Sylvia Calhoun. Tyler homeschools to allow for constant travel and national competitions. While Tyler is a heavy hitter within the high school rodeo circuit, he also spends time focusing on animal health working his horses on a regular practice schedule and learning the ins and outs of caring for his animals on his own. Once his high school rodeo days are over, Tyler would like to build his career as a cowboy.

Mr. Herbert Wheatfall came to the VFW meeting last week to personally thank the Auxiliary for their donation to help him rebuild. We also learned that Mrs. Verdell Jessie was his teacher when she taught in Courtney. It is very interesting to learn more history about the people of our county.
