The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team received a generous donation of new plate carriers Feb. 23, from the Lys family in memory of Robert Lys who passed away Dec. 5. Robert Lys was a longtime law enforcement officer who served 42 years as a Texas Game Warden assigned to Grimes County. The donated plate carriers feature padded mesh for comfort, laser cut Molle for easily attaching equipment and removable front placards to adjust load outs for differing scenarios.

In honor of Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Navasota hosted their Shrove Pancake Supper. The event resumed for the first time since COVID-19 surfaced in 2020.

Reality struck the moment Terrance Creeks Sr. learned his son, Terrance Creeks Jr., was shot in the head while traveling on Texas 6 in Navasota. His son was the passenger in the car driven by Andres Hernandez who was also shot and survived.
In a moment, a father could’ve lost his son. Creeks Sr. remembers Jan. 30, as the day God spared his son’s life but also as an awakening call. The bullet entered and exited his son’s head without cracking any bones or striking any arteries – a true miracle.
Read moreAt the Feb. 15 Regular Meeting of Grimes County Commissioners Court, commissioners approved a request by District Attorney Andria Bender’s office to reallocate $7,200 in unused salary to increase the Crime Victims Assistance Overtime fund by $1,200 and the DA Salaries fund by $6,000. The $7,200 represents the one-month vacancy left by former Assistant District Attorney Courtney Cain, now Madison County DA, and the start date of attorney Tammy Thomas.
According to Investigator John Wren, the DA’s office has used 60-70% of their overtime budget less than six months into the fiscal year. Wren attributed this to more trials with three courts operating now, only two legal assistants to cover three courts and a problem with new management software caused by the software company.

The motion by Commissioner Phillip Cox stipulated the outdoor addition is not to exceed $50,000 and must be in compliance with County policy related to smoking.
Echoing Judge Gary Chaney’s comments at the Feb. 1 commissioner court, Judge Moorman advised the court of the need to allow juries out of the jury room but the potential of coming in contact with victim and defendant families. He also had just learned of a county policy restricting smoking to no less than 15-feet from a door and requested consideration of a waiver for people summoned for jury service.
