Cold but sunny weather greeted volunteers at Oakland Cemetery for the second annual Wreaths Across America ceremony Saturday, Dec. 17. Participants included scout troops, service organizations, elected officials, veterans and their friends and family. But it was not until this past Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2022, that this was extended to include Gold Star Families, GSF. The phrase “Gold Star Family” is from World War I (1914 to 1918). Military families displayed service flags with a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces. The star’s color was changed to gold if the family lost a loved one in the war.

Both officers served as jailers at the Grimes County Jail for multiple years before successfully completing TEEX Central Texas Police Academy. Spears began working for GCSO in 2018 and Copeland began in 2021.
Read moreThe Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 924 Grimes County Greys, of Anderson, held their annual Christmas party Saturday, Dec. 10, as well as celebrated the 30th anniversary of the camp charter. The event was held at Commander Jody Ballard's residence with a total of 26 in attendance consisting of camp members and family along with music and entertainment provided by camp Chaplain Faber McMullen III for singalong Christmas carols. The event closed with camp officers Jody Ballard, Faber McMullen and Mike Harris performing the duty of new member initiation for Tim Sandlin. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a patriotic organization, not affiliated with any other organization and is neither political, racial nor sectional.

Cocina Texicana food truck was on hand to celebrate their new mobile food business, offering a wide menu selection. Owner Alicia Guillen told the crowd of her plans to participate at as many area fairs, festivals, and markets as possible, including Texas Pickers in Whitehall and the Navasota Farmers Market.
