Whitehall residents it’s time to show off your 42 domino skills. The Go-Texan festivities will include a 42 tournament Jan. 25 in the Lions Club Building. Registration time is 9 a.m. and tournament begins at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 which also includes lunch. There will be trophies for the top three teams. Let’s register teams and prove we are the best!

The Whitehall Community Center met Jan. 2 for their quarterly business meeting. We have new members. Chad and Nancy McMillan, and Mayor Charlie were present. Camden and Korey Cox were also present as they were visiting their grandparents, Ken and Bonnie.

The annual fundraiser will be April 25 and will include the usual car show, barbecue chicken plates for $10 and chicken will be sold separately with ½ for $6 and a whole chicken for $12. Sponsorships are available with $100 for Bronze, $250 for Silver and $500 for Gold. Each sponsorship comes with a few perks. The plan is to have live music, bucket raffle and hopefully additional vendors. Several members are working on the 501c3 status for us to perhaps be able to better maintain and upgrade the building for the community.

WHCVFD had another successful first Saturday fundraiser. We basically sold out of everything and had the inside tables full of customers throughout the sale. Thanks to all those who come to support the community.

In addition, we had two visitors from Nelspruit, South Africa, Niel and Charles De-Kock. They are visiting with the McMillan Family and helped them with organizing their barn, building a fire pit and numerous other farm jobs. I believe these two young men spent time with Chase and Julia while Chad was working in ministry in South Africa. They were very complimentary of our station and quite impressed with the barbecue. Julia and Bobby McMillan were also in the group, and of course, Mayor Charlie. I must admit; they were very friendly, respectful, always smiling and I just love their accent! It brought back a great memory of a track athlete at TAMU that I helped many years ago who called me his Guardian Angel. Of course that was when he first met me.

I laughed at Corky Huddleston when he reminded me that he was the first mayor of Whitehall and someone mentioned that Mayor Charlie was even shorter than him. Well, it was funny!

Darlene Taylor shared that her husband Doug returned home from the hospital. This is great news.

The WHCVFD held their monthly business meeting Monday, Jan. 6. There were 21 members present and an additional two prospective members. Numerous topics were discussed including the election of officers for this year. New and returning officers are: President and captain, Michael Serres; Vice president, Ken Cox; Fire Chief, Larry Vickers; Secretary, Gail Schroeder; Treasurer, Bonnie Cox; Training coordinator, Christopher Vickers; and CGFFA representative, Chief Vickers. Thank you to each of you for being willing to be the leaders for this community organization.

Salem Lutheran Ladies Circle met on this week for their monthly meeting. D’Ann Binder led the scripture reading and the meeting followed. Projects, to include, food drive, blankets for the nursing homes and possibly working on a special project to help a needy family was discussed.

Free canteen bingo will start again Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the Flight Lounge of the Grimes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4006. Children are welcome to attend if they are with their parent.

Our sick and homebound friends include Sue Kolojaco, Lawrence Lieder, Dorothy Mahaffey, Mary Bauer, Albin Finke, Rosa Finke, Lois Bell, Leon Gorney, Doug Taylor, Garry Wise, Kathy Cave Wells, Glenn Binder, Pauline Kaspar and Alexander Hanna, grandson of Curtis and Darla Kolojaco. Please add these friends to your prayer list.
