Several area churches were open again since the coronavirus began. Evergreen Baptist Church reopened for the first time since Sunday, March 15. There were approximately 50% present with others watching online. Carlos Fellowship Church was open as well. Others are still closed but will hopefully open soon. As the Bible says, “this too will pass.” Just keep praying for things to get back to normal.

There were a large number of people that attended the graveside service for John “Jonny” Byron Kay, age 77, at the Enon Cemetery near Iola Tuesday, May 5. There was a service the day before for family members. He was born May 19, 1942 and passed away Friday, May 1. He was born in Angleton to William Vernon Kay and Sybil Irene Holmes Kay.

John was married to Gaye Sanders for 53 years and was the parent of two sons, Byron James and Todd Philip Kay. He is survived by his wife and sons as well as grandchildren and other family. He was a member of Beacon Baptist Church in Bryan. Following the service that was conducted by Rev. Clinton Everitt and Rev. Scott Kay, family and friends that attended were served a meal at the family home on FM 244. Do remember his wife and other family members in your prayers.

The two Masonic Lodges in the area, The Orphans Friend Masonic Lodge in Anderson and the Bedias Masonic Lodge did not have their meeting this week. Hopefully they will be back in business before long. Keep an eye on this column for updates on their upcoming events.

The Iola Food Pantry will be open for business Saturday, May 16, from 8:30 a.m. till noon. The Evergreen Baptist Church will help this month. Anyone in need of a helping hand are welcome to come by and accept the food items.

Sunday, May 10 was Mother’s Day. Do hope that if your mother was alive that you either went by to see her, called her or sent her a card. If you did none of those things, then shame on you. My mother has been gone for 25-years and I often think of her and all the wonderful things she did to make my life better. May her memory and the memory of all the other mothers that have gone on be forever blessed.
