The most wonderful time

Johnny’s Issues

There are a number of reasons that I consider this time of year to be “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” In my head, I can hear Andy Williams singing about it. But what Andy is crooning about is the holiday season, mistletoe, good cheer, being with family, etc. I was thinking something else.

Although the holidays definitely play a significant part to this wonderful season, there is another, more, obvious thing that I appreciate about it. I am, of course, referring to this rare time of year when you can watch three Houston major pro sports teams that are all competing now. The Rockets, the Texans and the Astros are all active in their respective arenas, ready to provide an extreme sports fix. And who knows, we may even have another championship in the offing.

For those of you who were born devoid of the sports gene, you are still in luck. There are lots of other things happening out there that I’m sure you can appreciate.

Sweater-weather opportunities associated with this wonderful time of year include the myriad festivals and outdoor events. Around our area you have lots of choices, from the Mushroom Festival, to the Kolaches, Texas Reds, Boonville Days... this is a great time to check out our surrounding communities and attend these family-friendly fairs.

Locally, Grimes County’s own Texas Renaissance Festival is already in full swing. Always a good time, the Tex-RenFest draws in thousands of visitors each year. If you haven’t been in a while, maybe this is your year to check it out.

Also close to home are several upcoming cool-weather events. The “Lanterns and Legends” production that is put on at the Oakland Cemetery by the Navasota Theatre Alliance is a great fall favorite that happens at the end of October. Then in November, the Veterans Day observances along with the “Reds, Wheats and Blues” Festival will be returning to downtown Navasota. In Anderson, the Fanthorp Inn’s “Twilight Firelight” will be held at the month’s end. Those are just a few of the November happenings.

With the Holiday Season approaching, community activities include the City of Navasota’s “Home for the Holidays,” the Plantersville Christmas Parade and the Anderson Holiday Fest, among others.

I love that it is now temperate enough that we can open up the windows of our world and really air things out. It is a pleasure to let in that fresh air, whether at the house or just driving around. At home, the cooler weather can help bring down those electric bills.

So, I hope you enjoy and appreciate this most wonderful time of the year, with its sports thrills and temperature chills. And as for the cool breeze, “let it blow, let it blow, let it blow.”
