Save gas, celebrate July 4, locally

First Friday at Fanthorp Inn, 579 S. Main St. in Anderson will be held July 1 from 12-7 p.m. Special guided tours of the inn will be held at noon, 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. This event will include first person interpretation meaning a historical figure will guide guests through their experiences with Henry Fanthorp and his inn. You are invited to follow in the footsteps of Lady Amelia Murray, Queen Victoria’s “Maid of Honour” who traveled extensively through Texas in 1855.

The 3rd Annual Fourth of July Freedom Festival, hosted by the City of Navasota, will be held in downtown Navasota Friday evening, July 1. Come out to enjoy family fun and celebrate our country’s Independence Day beginning with the Red, White and Blue parade at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to participate in this free event that does not require registration. You can ride decorated bicycles, wagons, golf carts, ATV’s, floats, drive a “cool” vehicle, walk the route or just whatever floats your boat. Please arrive at 5 p.m. on Brosig Ave. to line up. The Brown Sugar Band will take the stage outside of Navasota City Hall at 7 p.m. to provide live music. A firework display at Brule Field will end the evening at 9:30 p.m. You can go to the field or just stay downtown to easily view the display. Vendors will be onsite for the purchase of food and beverages.

The Anderson Food Pantry, 367 Fanthorp St. will be open the first Thursday, July 7, from 9 a.m. - noon. All residents of Grimes County in need of food can participate. For more information contact Renee Fredwood, 936-873-5005.

Anderson-Shiro CISD will host their annual substitute teacher training and orientation for those interested in substitute teaching for the 2022- 2023 school year. It will be located in the Central Office Boardroom, 458 FM 149 W in Anderson on Friday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. For more information call the district office, 936- 873-4500.

I just received the Knights of Columbus Council #4054’s latest newsletter. Knight of the Month for May was James “Jim” Hennessy and Family of the Month was Robert and Beth Jesurun.

If you are looking for a facility or pavilion to rent for a special occasion such as a family reunion, birthday party, anniversary celebration, etc., don’t forget the KC Hall, 1962 Hwy. 90 South in Anderson, is available. For rental, contact James Moran, 936-306-9663.

Don loves movies, but he is not a “movie goer.” He would rather wait for it to come out on TV and watch it at home. I did talk him into going to see the new Top Gun movie that came out this weekend and he enjoyed it. It was an excellent movie. First, I re-watched the original to bring back the whole story and then this one continued on from that movie.
