Grimes County Schools don’t forget the Oct. 31 deadline for the two different scholarships, Voice of Democracy and the Patriot’s Pen, offered through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4006. The first scholarship is for grades 9-12 and the second is available for grades 6-8. Homeschooled and parochial school students are also included in these scholarships. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Counselors, if you need these picked up, I will come to you. My phone number and email are at the end of my column.

The Burn Ban was lifted Wednesday, Oct. 16. Thank you, Chief Vickers for letting me know.

News from Lynn Grove United Methodist Church sent from Laurie Shine

Lynn Grove UMC enjoyed their 129th Annual Homecoming Oct. 14. There were approximately 70 in attendance. The weather was fabulous for this wonderful celebration. Barbecue plus all the various side dishes were served. The dessert tables were a big hit with everything from cookies, pies, bars, cakes and cobblers available. Adults gathered outside under the pavilion and inside for fellowship during their meal. Children, in their glory, were playing on the playground. It was an awesome day for worship and fellowship with those we don’t get to see often. We are very thankful and appreciate all the helping hands in setting up, serving and clean up.

Cedar Hill, known as Courtney Cemetery Association, will be having a workday Saturday, Nov. 9, starting at 9:30 a.m. Please bring tools, trash bags and gloves to help with removing all broken items, trimming trees and making repairs to gravesites.

The Sonshine Sisters met for their monthly game of dominoes. We had only four ladies present but we still enjoyed our conversation and game.

Reminder: The Veteran’s Day festivities are Nov. 9. Come out and support your local VFW Post 4006. We have been working on the fundraiser at the Whiskey Tango in order to raise money to help veterans in need. We would appreciate the people of the county coming out and eating a meal with us, buying some raffle tickets, maybe purchase a baked item and enjoy the silent auctions. Since all the items are donated, our proceeds will be strictly profit for worthy causes. Thanks in advance. If you want raffle tickets, just call me.

My goodness, it will be Thanksgiving and Christmas before we know it. This year seems to have flown by quickly. Gee whiz, I really hate to think about adding another birthday this year. Can I quit counting?

Please add John Lawrence back to your prayer list. He took a nasty fall this week and had to be hospitalized.
