Stephens completes Naval Boot Camp

A celebration of life was held at the First Baptist Church in Huffman Monday, Oct. 7, for our good friend Benjamin Franklin “Bill” Cunningham. The church was filled with his loving family and friends.

He was born in Clovis, New Mexico, Aug. 4, 1928, and passed away Sept. 23 at his home in Crosby. As a young boy Bill’s family moved to Houston. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married his long love Ruth Brown in 1949. He became a firefighter for the city of Houston in 1950. He and his wife became the parents of four daughters. He served the fire department for 25 years and nine months. He and his wife moved to Keith where they lived for 15 years. Here they made many friends. Many were sorry they moved away. Remember his wife and other family members in your prayers.

The Keith Community had another high school graduate, Heather Stephens, complete Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, and graduated Oct. 4. Family members that attended the graduation her parents Kyle and Loah Stephens and little sister Kacee. Other family members that attended the after-graduation celebrations were brothers Trevor and sister Kayla. Remember her in your prayers.

Area friends of Patricia W. Churchwell were sorry to learn of her death Thursday, Oct. 3. Her burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Carlos Monday, Oct. 7. She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Bill E. Church-well who passed away Nov. 10, 2007. At one time he pastored Iola Church of Christ. Do remember her family in your prayers.

There was a full house at the memorial service for Paula Denise Hepkins Mallett at the Bedias Baptist Church Saturday, Oct. 5. She was the wife of Danny Mallett. She was born Aug. 4, 1961 and passed away Sept. 27. A lot of the Keith Community attended the service. She was buried in the Cross Cemetery Sunday, Sept. 29. Do remember her husband and other family members in your prayers.

I hope all area residents will make plans to attend the annual Hay Day celebration in Iola Saturday, Oct. 19. The day will center around Main Street go on for most of the day. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. There will be food booths and lots of other fun things. Hope to see you there.

The monthly meeting of the Orphans Friend Masonic Lodge No 17 was held at their lodge hall in Anderson Monday, Oct. 7, with a good number of members and visitors. The meal was enjoyed by all. During the meeting Leo Brown made his official visit. He is the District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District 29-B. He brought greetings from Terry W. Stogner who is the Grand Master of the State of Texas.

Happy birthday this week to Oct. 13- Morgan Leigh Trant Prihoda, Alice Longley; Oct. 14- Beverly Chaney; Oct. 15- Rudy Galvan; Oct. 16- Ricky Edwin Rice, Willie Ray Harrison, Ralph Barnett; Oct. 17- Mitchell Beene, John Matthew Schmidt; Oct. 18- John Curtis Stewart; Oct. 19- Darrell Lee Walker; Hope that your special day was a happy one.

The Carlos Missionary Baptist Church enjoyed their revival from Sunday, Sept. 29, through Wednesday, Oct.

2. The speaker was Bro. David Saffle who is the minister of Crossroads Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Richards. Members of his church musical team joined him. There were visitors at each service. David is the son of Carlos Church pastor, Bro. Joe Saffle and his wife Gail.

The Fields of Faith Service was held at the Iola football field Wednesday, Oct. 9, and was well attended by area churches. Over 100 people attended. Several Iola students participated in the service. The message was brought by Wade Phillips who is aligned with 3 in 1 Ministries.

Area friends of Houston Dirickson were sorry to learn of his death last week. His funeral will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m with burial following in the Evergreen Cemetery. Do remember his loved ones in your prayers.
