My goodness, can you believe that it is already February? They say that time flies when you are having fun; are you having fun yet? Mine will begin when I can get outside and play in the yard!
•Another Flight basketball tournament is in the books for Canyon (Bean). Since Mike Kurtin assisted me Saturday, I was able to go see him play. While he is not as aggressive as his sister, he is doing better.
At the second game, I did yell at one of the refs, because I knew him. His oldest son played youth ball with my Jordan beginning when they were 4-years-old. The ref has a Jordan, too … Jordan Jefferson, #75, Rattler Nation!
Flight won their two scheduled games. Thanks to coaches from all of the towns, who give their time and energy helping to teach these youngsters and take them around the community to play.
•Texas Pickers reported that the ‘Good Time Eats’ sold out and the crowd was fantastic. Pickers shut down a few hours early to allow people to attend the fundraiser for their friend, Tubie. They also extended an invitation to come visit them the first Saturday in March.
•It appears that the VFD debut of “sales at the station” turned out successful. Being out of the elements and not having to worry about money flying out of the cash box was a plus in itself. Thanks to several members donating pork butts (I had to add pork) and to Billy Cox for his very generous donation, we had a profitable sale. The VFD appreciates the community for continuously supporting them.
Hey, Billy Cox, wanna’ join? We encourage anyone who is interested in helping the community to join our group. Fighting fires is not a requirement, but we could always use more firefighters. There is training and bunker gear waiting for you. Auxiliary members are welcomed as well. This group backs the firefighters with large fires, fundraisers or wherever they are needed. We are all non-paid volunteers and we operate mostly on fundraiser profits and donations. Feel free to come, check out our organization and consider joining.
•WHCVFD met Monday for the monthly business meeting with 19 members, one new prospect and one visitor present. Plans have been finalized and the memorial for past Assistant Chief Lieder is in the making. We appreciate all the donations to make this possible.
Our team will be involved in a communications training class to learn the new county radios. President Mike Serres is attending a lengthy ECA class to receive his certification. Several members reported positive feedback from customers regarding how impressed they were with our station. There are plans to make even more upgrades soon.
•The VFD will have a team at the Feb. 16 annual Pleasant Hill Lodge #380 Chili Cook-off at the Waller County Fairgrounds. Come out and support our team.
•The benefit for Tubie and his wife appears to have been quite successful. From a message I received: all the food was sold, bands were good and everyone had a great time. Thanks to everyone who supported in any way!
•The Courtney-Whitehall 4H meets at 6 p.m. every second Sunday of the month at the Whitehall Community Center. They enjoy new members.
•Salem Lutheran, Lynn Grove UMC and Union Grove Baptist are churches that offer various worship times and each one welcomes visitors to attend.
•If you are a member of the Grimes VFW, please consider coming to the meetings and helping with the many need of our veterans. Our post tries to assist the veterans in our Grimes County communities. If you know of someone needing assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me or leave a message at the post.
•Mark those calendars for the Saturday, April 27, Birthday Bash at the Whitehall Community Center. There will be cars and motorcycles to see, good barbecue to eat, vendors to check out, a bucket raffle, music to enjoy and people to visit with. Come join the fun and help support the Whitehall community.
