First, I want to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year as we move into 2023. Thinking about years that have passed, I remember the anxiety level of many who thought the year 2000 would be the end of everything we knew. However, look where we are now, or shall I say think about where we are now.

Thursday was the final meeting of the calendar year for the Grimes County VFW Post 4006 and we held a recognition ceremony for the winners of our contests. Luke Leman won the Patriot’s Pen which is for junior high students. Ben Leman, Jr. won the Voice of Democracy which is for high school students and Eric Brown was nominated and chosen for the SMART Maher Teacher of the year award. Eric is a life skills teacher at NHS. It was a good to meet Eric and Stacy Holliman who is a counselor at Navasota.

Friday the Sonshine Sisters decided on a day out and went to Classic Rock for lunch. Yes, we were in public and yes, we did laugh and have a wonderful time as we usually do. The waitstaff was very accommodating to the “older” customers.

Saturday was the Wreaths Across America day for placing wreaths on the graves of veterans.  The Salem Ladies Circle chose to sponsor this project and we were fortunate to have many volunteers help us purchase and place the wreaths on all the veteran’s grave. My personal thanks go to Pastor Christians for working with me and Dorothy Holtkamp who was a big help to me too. The Courtney White Hall 4-H group came and took turns placing wreaths. Again, thank you for helping make our project a success.

My neighbor, Kathy Wells, is the location coordinator for Grimes County and she worked to have our county included in this effort honoring our veterans. Steve Storey, Commander of the American Legion and a member of the VFW Post 4006, helped Kathy. If you have younger family members, please take time to teach them how to honor our veterans and active military members. Without them, our country would not have the freedoms we have.

Sunday was my birthday. I would say it was a big one, but it is quite evident that all my birthdays are big ones when it comes to the number. My entire small family met for supper. It was such a blessing to look around the table and enjoy their jokes, smiles, singing and just being themselves. Thank you again to my family.

So many wished me a happy birthday either by text, phone, verbal, Facebook, and cards which sure made me feel good. Thank you very much.
