It’s been a big week in Richards - Friday RISD Seniors were honored as they walked the stage for their final act as Panthers. This group of 17 young adults have plans that range from Agricultural Science, Social Media Marketing, to Cyber Security and Government protection. Guest speaker for the RISD graduation was be Robert Frazier, brother to History Teacher for RISD Timothy Frazier. Robert Frazier has a background working for the US Government with a specialty in securities and policies. While his brother Timothy Frazier has worked for RISD for several years and works with students to teach U.S. and local history as well as important civics for local government.

Prior to senior week, two of the senior athletes were recognized for their outstanding strengths. Joseph (Joey) Miller made second-team all-district for baseball, track and Academic All-State. Reece Wrobleski made honorable mention all-district for baseball, track and Academic All-State. RISD also hosted their Athletic Awards banquet on May 21, parents were able to participate via Facebook.

Eighth grade and kindergarten graduation were celebrated May 25 with speeches from Terry Dean II, Valedictorian and Candence Nance, Salutatorian. One of the best things about graduation speeches are the gratitude students have for teachers, staff and administration who have nurtured, loved and taught these young adults. The gratitude, and recognition from their students goes a long way, proving the work, stress and dedication was worth it! “My teachers in every grade level have added a new experience to my student life. I have grown an unbreakable bond with all of my mentors,” said Dean during his speech.

Richards VFD

Richards VFD would like to remind our community to be prepared for hurricane season by following several easy steps: have a minimum of seven-day supply of food, water and medications for all members of the home; Remember to keep the same amount on hand for any pets in the home or on the farm; Water is important- be sure you have enough to drink and cook with; Batteries and lights- utilize long lasting lights and batteries and be sure to have extras on hand; Emergency contacts- if you are injured be sure you have an emergency contact card on your person, wallet or purse to help first responders or medical staff.

Our VFD group is also in need of volunteers to train as a firefighter and to help with the annual November BBQ fundraiser. Volunteers for the fundraiser can sign up to bake a dessert, donate new auction items, and/or work the event. Remember all the proceeds from the fundraiser help our VFD team purchase tools, equipment, and much needed supplies, as well as go toward the purchase of a new tanker. To sign up and volunteer call 936-873-2211, or email richardsfiredept@gmail.com.
