The 'dog days of summer'

The Grimes County Fair has come and gone and now these fair participants can enjoy the rest of the summer which goes by so fast. But these “dog days of summer” with the temperatures in the 100s seem to linger slowly. I remember as a kid the hottest days of summer were June and July but as a rule, the hottest days tend to come in August and September. As for winter, the coldest days used to be in November and December but seems to come in January and February these years. I know it has something to do with our atmosphere but since science was not my favorite subject in school I didn’t catch onto the reasoning behind it all!

As so many others will do now, our “Hoffart family” will also take some time to vacation a bit. That’s why this week’s column is short and sweet! Of course, all things tend to go wrong when vacationing time comes around and this year was no different. As they say, when it rains, it pours! Anything that could’ve happened in the last couple of weeks did. So, as I was watering my plants before taking out, I suddenly remembered I hadn’t written my column for this week’s paper. I thought of it a couple of days ago but didn’t write down a reminder on a sticky note, something I’m famous for doing. I absolutely could not live without sticky notes. So here I am rambling on quickly before heading out for some fun and sun. As the favorite scripture of my late brother-in-law Dana Sowell, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.

Another matriarch of the community, Anna Mae Vezurk, wife of the late Steve Vezurk, passed away June 10. In their younger years, Steve and Anna Mae were very involved in their church and their community loving every minute they lived in Grimes County. Condolences to the family of Ms. Anna Mae who will be missed by family and friends.
