Iola Food Pantry distribution Sept. 18

The annual Martin Prairie Cemetery Association meeting was held at Martins Prairie Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 5, with good attendance. The meeting was called to order by Dexter Lavender. Opening prayer was led by Ron Frazier. Two songs were sung and a special song by song was performed by John Briscoe. He performed “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” A devotional was given by Stanton Hill.

The names of 11 people who died over the last two years were read and a white rose was presented to a member of their family. The floral tributes were read by Judy Godeaux. Monetary tributes were given by Darlene Lavender. There was a short business meeting in which the condition of the cemetery fence and gates were discussed. The closing prayer was given by Jim Candler. Those present then went to the fellowship hall for a noon lunch that was enjoyed by all.

The community was sorry to learn about the death of Travis Herndon, the brother of Jan Timm, who drowned recently. She and her husband as well as other family members attended the funeral in Florida. Do remember all of them in your prayers. Richard Timm was supposed to present the Davis Family history for the cemetery association meeting.

Area residents were sorry to learn of the death of Kevin McDuffie who passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the hospital in Tomball. His funeral was held in another town and burial services were held in the Evergreen Cemetery Wednesday, Sept. 8. Do remember his wife and children in your prayers.

Another death in the community was that of Kimberly Carson Doty who passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 1. Her memorial service will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. Do remember her husband, son and parents in your prayers.

The Iola Food Pantry will distribute food at Iola Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Saturday, Sept. 18. The workers from Evergreen Baptist Church will be available from 9 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. Anyone who needs a helping hand will be assisted.

There was a cleanup held in Evergreen Cemetery Friday, Sept. 4, by a group of men hired by and paid for by the church and cemetery association. They cleaned the fences and trimmed the trees. It looks really good. Drive over and take a look.

The monthly meeting of Orphans Friend Masonic Lodge No 17 was held Sept. 6, at their lodge hall in Anderson with a good number of members and visitors present. Joe B. Davis, a former Texas Ranger, was the guest speaker. His speech was enjoyed by all. Michael Allen Wisby, the District Deputy Grand Master from Masonic District 29 B brought the message from the Grand Master of Texas Masons. There was also a covered dish meal enjoyed by all.

The monthly meeting of Bedias Masonic Lodge No. 651 was held at their lodge hall on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with a fair number in attendance. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. During the business meeting the lodge voted to give $200 each to students in Iola and Madisonville to buy school supplies.

Do hope your special day was a happy one.

Happy anniversary this week to the following: Robert Bob and Tina Templeton, married Sept. 17, 2005. Join me in wishing them many more years of happiness together.
