Sounds of Summer

    Courtesy photos The 2019 “Sounds of Summer” free concert series in downtown Navasota concluded Friday, June 28 with the Brown Sugar Band. The event brought the community together with cool tunes on hot nights throughout the month of June. This year’s performers included Brown Sugar Band, Grupo Vital, Randy Pavlock and Breeze Band.

Seeking Bridge players

•If you play Bridge, you are needed to form a small group of players. Contact Ann Dewitt 979-492-9263 for more information.

Free Exercise Class

•A free exercise class focusing on strength and flexibility for senior adults taught by John MacDonald. They meet at Roans Prairie Community Center Monday and Thursday at 4 p.m. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Contact John 979-595-6175 for more information.

Every Thursday

•Need to Lose Weight? Join TOPS of Navasota, “Take Off Pounds Sensibly.” They meet every Thursday at 6 pm. at Grimes St. Joseph Outpatient/Rehab Building located next door to the hospital, 210 Judson St, Navasota. Private weigh in 5:30 p.m. to 5:55 p.m. A meeting is held at 6 p.m. Low, affordable monthly dues, group discussions and encouragement.

July 4

• The City’s annual Independence Daze and Parade will take place July 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will begin with a patriotic themed parade at 10 a.m. at Prosperity Bank, 109 W. Washington Ave. Participating in the parade is free and does not require registration. Line-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tenth St., next to Prosperity Bank. Activities will begin once the parade concludes. Activities include giveaways, bounce houses, an inflatable obstacle course and free admission into the Navasota Municipal Pool until 2 p.m. The Navasota Noon Lions Club will be serving free hotdogs, chips and lemonade in the courtyard of the Navasota Center. This event is put on by the city of Navasota for the public to enjoy a free, family friendly event to celebrate Independence Day. For more information, please contact City Hall at 936-825-6475.

• The annual Iola Fireworks Show is July 4. Starting at 7:30 p.m. there will be a free hot dog dinner complete with watermelon and dessert. Bring the entire family. The fireworks will start at dark. Don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs.

• There will be a Fourth of July Bingo and Ice Cream Social at the Roans Prairie Community Center from 2 p.m. till 5 p.m. There will be Bingo and prizes. Cards are two for five dollars. Ice Cream is free but bring your favorite toppings. The event is sponsored by Roans Prairie Community Center, Singleton Community Center and the Shiro Civic Association.

July 6

•There will be a barbeque cookoff benefit for Marlene White who is battling cancer. The cookoff will have live music. For more information contact Martin Solis 936-419-3576. Please mail donations to 821 Duke Street, Navasota Tx. 77868.

July 9

• Grimes County Fair Association monthly meeting at the Grimes County Go Texan building. Meeting begins at 7 p.m. Premium sale exhibitors may pick up pictures for delivery at 6 p.m.

July 10

•Senior Health and Activity Day, 10:30 a.m. till 1 p.m. at the Bedias Civic Center. There will be bingo, a guest speaker and lunch will be provided. Call 936=870-4575, by June 3 to reserve your spot. Rides will be provided if needed, call to schedule.

August 13

• Grimes County Fair Association monthly meeting at the Grimes County Go Texan building. Proposed changes to the by-laws will be discussed. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

October

•NHS Prom this year will be April 25, 2020 at The Brazos Center for NHS Juniors, Seniors and their guests. Tickets go on sale in September and end April 7, 2020. There will be a fund-raiser the first two weeks of October and the first two weeks of February to help with the purchase of prom tickets. October 4

•Navasota High School homecoming honoring the Class of 2020 and all alumni of the Classes ending in “0”. A memory walk of posters will be on display in the NHS Library October 4, 2019 to view graduates of the classes ending in “0”.
