Posted in:

Grimes County Go Texan has been in existence for 37 years — 37 years ago Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo gave the committee $250 as a County Scholarship. They now give the applicant that qualifies $20,000 and the local Grimes County Go Texan Committee gives additional scholarships to local seniors that apply and qualify.

In 2018 Grimes County Go Texan gave more than $55,800 to 31 qualifying students. This year the committee anticipates giving that much or more to the qualifying applicants. Over the past 37 years, Grimes County Go Texan has given in excess of $718,800 to qualifying senior applicants. In the history of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, more than $550 Million Dollars have been given in scholarships by HLSR.

The Grimes County Go Texan Committee consists of Gary Moriarity, Ambassador; Stacey Ross, Treasurer; Molly Hurst, Secretary; and members Donna Gessner, Danny Clark, David Dobyanski, Randy Duke, Eddie Eppler, Cary Hackler, Larry Harvey, Tammy Harvey, Roy Henderson, Lee Igo, Angie Imhoff, Pierce Key, Randy Krueger, Michele McNew, Ricky Schroeder, Chris Tagudin, Carla Bosse, Jordan Hargrove and Ken Mock.

The Committee works hard as a team to raise funds to assist the youth of Grimes County through scholarships and donations to local youth group organizations and other organizations such as NISD Foundation, ASISD Foundation, Special Olympics, local fire departments, local food bank, Toys for Tots, Grimes County Expo Center Pee Wee Activities, Ag Mechanics and the Grimes County Little League. In 2018 Grimes County Go Texan donated more than $10,000 to these organizations.

The Grimes County Go Texan weekend is scheduled for Jan. 25-27. There will be 70 barbeque teams participating for first, second and third place in County and Open Brisket, Chicken, and Ribs, as well as, a Jack Pot Chili and Bloody Mary Contest.

This year the committee made some changes from previous formats. Friday night, there will be a dance featuring Jeff Woolsey and there will be a mini auction at approximately 10 p.m. consisting of six items. Admission to the dance will be $20 per person. Saturday night will feature The Desert Road Band and admission to the dance will be $10. There will be a $10 entry charge for the Go Texan event starting at 5 p.m. Saturday until 12 a.m. This entry charge will get you into the dance and activities in the team area. The only entry during this time will be the Main Hall entrance doors and the Main Gate next to the Main Hall.

Everyone is asked to come out and enjoy the Go Texan Weekend and help support the Youth of Grimes County. Admission to the grounds is free of charge until 5 p.m. Saturday and there will be local vendors and food vendors.
