Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

As many of you know Sandra and I have been in Bedias for over 25 years.

During this time at almost every forum I have attended, I have brought up the terrible condition of our roads in the Hall subdivisions in Grimes County.

To start with, the commissioners court, back when these roads were being constructed, let the developer get by without bringing them up to county specification.

It was the county’s fault for letting this happen. That was over 25 years ago.

Every time I, as Justice of the Peace, brought up the roads in the north part of the county, commissioners court would simply say that they are private roads and the county can’t work on them.

While that is what the law says, it does not excuse the County from working with the residents to correct the problem.

The fire department, ambulances, and even school buses have had problems going down those roads.

At the same time there was a street in the south part of the county that had 2 elderly couples living on that road that could not get an ambulance to reach their homes in the case of an emergency. The county accepted that road and started maintaining it.

It has been over 25 years and the commissioner’s court has not made any effort to remedy this matter. They should investigate every opportunity to fix this and fix it now.

The standard answer we get is the county can’t work on private roads while the residents still must pay taxes. The same answers came from the candidates at the forum running for commissioner precinct 1 tonight.

Again, this is the county’s problem and has been for more than 25 years and that is too long. The commissioner’s court needs to get off their butts and correct this situation. But they won’t.

Gene Stapleton,

Bedias, TX
