    Democracy in action at the Navasota City Hall Thursday morning, Feb. 20. Candidates for the spring city council election, or their representatives, drew for order on the May 2, 2020 ballot.  Council incumbent Bernie Gessner and Ethan Peters, son of opponent Randy Peters, draw for Place 1 with Gessner pulling the first spot.

First Monday

• The Grimes County Republican Party meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month at the Anderson Community Center, 415 Hill St. in Anderson.

Second Tuesday

• The Grimes County Democrats meet at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Progressive Outreach Center located at 615 W. Virginia St. in Navasota.

• The Grimes County Amateur Radio Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Navasota Center, 101 Stadium Drive, in Navasota. The club is open to all ages. Visit the group website at www.gcarg.org or follow the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gcoarg. There is also a weekly net meeting at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday: 146.740 -6 offset 156.7 tone.

• The Richards Township Association holds their monthly meetings at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Richards Fire Department.

February 19 – February 28

• Grimes Health Resource Center is offering a free “Let’s Get Healthy” workshop every Friday beginning Jan. 31 – Feb. 28, 10:30 a.m. Fun exercises for all fitness levels, healthy eating on a budget, great tasting healthy snacks, prepared dishes and much more!

February 26 – March 25

February 28

• Join the Navasota Knights of Columbus Co. 9367 for the Fish Fry 2020 Friday, Feb. 28, 5-8 p.m. at the KC Hall, 9306 CR 420 in Navasota. Catfish, Fries, Hush Puppies and Coleslaw; $10 plate. Dine in or pick up available.

• The Progressive Women of Grimes County will host “A Symposium on Women in Leadership Roles” Friday, Feb. 28, 7-9 p.m. at the Navasota Center, 101 stadium Drive. Join them and listen to Texas women who are engaged as civic leaders. Women who step into leadership roles today pave the road for young women who will be leaders of the future. Introduction by Jon Fultz, Grimes Co. Attorney, Barbara Walker, Elizabeth Hernandez and Laura Jones. Admission is $5; all profits go to the PWGC Literacy Project to provide books for Navasota Head Start Program.

February 29

• If you want to learn some Early Spring Gardening Tips and How to Prep Your Landscape for Spring attend the Free Grimes County Master Gardeners “Leap into Spring” seminar on February 29, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00p.m. at Plantersville Town Hall, 11335 Lodge Lane, Plantersville. Pre-registration is not required. Gardening literature will be available to take home with you.

• Leap on over this coming Saturday, February 29 to “R PLACE” at Washington on the Brazos. Misslette, TheSingingCowgirl and Joe Lester will be there pickin’ and grinnin’ from 6pm to 9 p.m. Randy has an exquisite culinary delight in store to celebrate this rare day.

March 4

• Tri-county Diggers Garden Club next meeting will be held at Bobo’s Nursery at 3767 Hwy 90 North, Buffalo on Wednesday, March 4. They will meet at the Walmart parking lot in Madisonville to carpool at 9:30am. The program will be “Mixed Plants for Certain Pots” presented by Ginger Vybiral, Executive Manager of Bobo’s Nursery. Afterwards, they will have lunch at a nearby restaurant. Visitors are welcome to attend.

March 6-7

• Join the City of Navasota for their Annual Texas Birthday Bash Friday & Saturday, March 6-7th in downtown Navasota. General & VIP tickets are now available for purchase at www.texasbirthdaybash. com. For more information, please contact the City at 936-825-6475.

March 14-15

• Bring the family out for a fun field day with the Iola VFD for their benefit BBQ Cook-off Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. There will be kid’s activities, vendors, life auction, live music & a dance. This in an IBCA sanctioned event. $225 entry fee for meats; $5000 cash payout based on entry of 25 teams, $20 entry fee for sides; 50% payout for 1st place beans, chili & open class. April 4

• Join the Grimes County 4-H for a Crawfish Boil Fundraiser Saturday, April 4th, 12-7 p.m. at Navasota High School, 1 Rattler Drive. Tickets may be purchased through 4-H by March 15, tickets are $10 and includes all you can eat crawfish, treats, music and games! For more information, please contact the Grimes County Extension Office.

Free Exercise Class

• A free exercise class focusing on strength and flexibility for senior adults taught by John MacDonald. They meet at Roans Prairie Community Center Monday and Thursday at 4 p.m. The event is free, but donations are accepted. Contact John 979-595-6175 for more information.

Every Thursday

• Need to Lose Weight? Join TOPS of Navasota, “Take Off Pounds Sensibly.” They meet every Thursday at 6 pm. at Grimes St. Joseph Outpatient/Rehab Building located next door to the hospital, 210 Judson St, Navasota. Private weigh in 5:30 p.m. to 5:55 p.m. A meeting is held at 6 p.m. Low, affordable monthly dues, group discussions and encouragement.

Every Monday & Wednesday

• Free GED and ESL classes are offered every Monday and Wednesday, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Please call Anthony Garcia at 979/209-7300 for more information.

First Thursday

• The Bedias Civic Club meets at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Bedias Civic Center. Visit www.facebook.com/ BediasCivicClub, for the latest updates.

First Saturday

• Head to Whitehall the first Saturday of each month for Texas Pickers Antiques market that runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

• The Whitehall Community Volunteer Fire Department will hold their barbecue sandwich fundraiser beginning at 11 a.m. the first Saturday of each month.

Second Monday

• American Legion McCluskey Post 640 meets at 5 p.m. the second Monday of each month at 415 Hill St. in Anderson.
