Examiner photo by Ana Cosino: Speed may be the blame for a two-vehicle collision that killed one and seriously injured another Saturday morning, Dec. 18, on Texas State Highway 105, near Plantersville.

An 18-year old Texas A&M student-athlete, Chance Gibson, was killed in a car crash on wet roadways while attempting to return to his home in The Woodlands for the holiday break.

The two-vehicle accident happened 1.4 miles west of Plantersville. Department of Public Safety Sergeant Justin Ruiz stated on Saturday, Dec. 18, at approximately 11:25 a.m., Ann Taylor, 59, of San Antonio, was driving a 2020 Nissan passenger car, traveling westbound on Texas State Highway 105. Gibson, driving a 2019 Dodge passenger car, was travelling eastbound at an “unsafe speed for roadway conditions.” Ruiz said Gibson’s vehicle hydroplaned and went into the westbound lane striking the Nissan head-on.

Gibson was pronounced deceased on scene by Grimes County Justice of the Peace Lester Underwood. Taylor was taken to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital with incapacitating injuries.

Ruiz stated the accident is still under investigation.
