Grimes County’s 2022 law enforcement Officer of the Year will be announced Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Grimes County Crime Stoppers’ annual awards dinner. Grimes County’s own Willy 1550/98.7 deejay Kenny Graves will kick things off at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1962 SH 90 in Anderson. Doors open at 5:15 p.m.

This year’s guest speaker will be Texas State Representative Kyle Kacal.

The nominees are…

This year’s nominees for Officer of the Year are Grimes County Deputy Constable Swank Backhus, Grimes County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Nic Malmstrom and Navasota Police Department Investigator Travis Mullins.

An award for Meritorious Service will also be presented to an individual from the ranks of certified jailers, dispatchers and other support staff and those nominees are Grimes County Sheriff’s Office Jailer Carolyn Lucherk and Navasota Police Department Senior Office Supervisor, Marla Gurka.

Nominations are submitted to Grimes County Crime Stoppers by the law enforcement agencies serving Grimes County. Nominees for Officer of the Year must be peace officers certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). All nominees must have been employed with a Grimes County law enforcement agency during the period Nov. 1, 2021, through Oct. 31, 2022, and currently employed with an agency within Grimes County.

LE eat free

This year’s meal will be catered by Mark McGinty’s Best Thing Smoking BBQ, and as always, is free to law enforcement personnel and their families and by donation to the general public.

All law enforcement personnel will go home with a “thank you” from the community they serve by way of gift cards or other items donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals.

No Grimes County Crime Stoppers’ live auction would be complete without firearms donated by B&T Tactical. An AR-15 is among the many live auction items which include two VIP passes to the 11th Texas Birthday Bash, an ErgoGenesis office chair.

For information on the event, how to donate or become a sponsor, contact Connie Clements at (936) 825-8687.
