Getting much needed rain

There were a few showers this evening and they sure were nice. There is nothing like the sweet smell of rain on a spring day! Perhaps there will be more rain this week. The weatherman says it is possible. We certainly need it as it was getting pretty dry here.

One blessing we all share is that we live in an area where we have such a great sheriff’s department and great law enforcement officers, jailers, and DPS officers. There has been a lot of negativity in parts of the United States that we have all been hearing about. It seems there always has to be one bad apple. That is true but one bad apple does not have to spoil the whole bunch unless we let it.

I feel very secure and protected with our sheriff’s department and police departments in Navasota. I have no complaints. I feel for the ones that have had a bad experience. I think we should all say something nice and be encouraging to our law officers. We should be supportive of them. They do such a great job for all of us. Could you imagine what our world would be without them?

Grimes County along with the Grimes County Sheriff’s Departments lost one of their own this week. Sadness was shared when word spread that Jim Adkins, of Navasota, who worked for the Grimes County Sheriff’s Department in the jail division passed away unexpectedly June 13. A celebration of his life was held June 18, at Union Grove Baptist Church here in Richards officiated by Rev. M. McAllster and Rev. Ed “Mac” Vaughn Kucera, with interment at Pool Cemetery.

Please keep our Sheriff Don Sowell and his family in your prayers. Sheriff Sowell’s father, Mr. Johnnie Lee Sowell passed away June 15. Services were under the direction of Nobles Funeral Home with burial at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Carlos.

Saturday was a work day for Richards Volunteer Fire Department and it was reported they had a nice crowd.

Also, on Saturday a Farmers Market was set up on Main Street in Richards with vegetables and jams.

The Richards Civic Club held their bimonthly board meeting Tuesday. Their regularly monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Richards Community Center. Everyone is welcome.
