A driver passing another vehicle illegally is the cause for a fatality crash that claimed one life before midnight Wednesday, Dec. 4.

At 11:57 p.m. emergency personnel responded to an accident on Texas State Highway 105, 4.2 miles east of Navasota.

Sergeant Jimmy Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a 2007 Saturn Aura driven by Roberto Acosta Lopez, 18, of Houston was traveling westbound on Hwy. 105 and attempted to pass a vehicle on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Morgan stated Lopez left the roadway onto the grass and overcorrected back onto the highway crossing the center stripe and colliding with a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickup driven by William Foster, 58, of Montgomery.

Lopez was pronounced deceased on scene by justice of the peace Precinct 3 Mark Laughlin. Foster was transported to CHI St. Joseph in Bryan in stable condition. Morgan stated both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.

Morgan’s district covers seven counties and Morgan said that Grimes County has led the district in fatality crashes for three consecutive years. In 2019 Grimes County leads again with 13 fatality wrecks and 14 lives claimed on Grimes County roadways.
