Navasota Independent School District announced there is no opposition in the 2020 school board elections and also promoted Kristi Ramsey to principal at Navasota High School at a regularly scheduled meeting of the NISD board of trustees Monday, Feb. 17.

Ramsey served as interim principal replacing Derek Bowman, who was promoted to Director of Personnel and Administrative Services, in September 2019. For the full release read “Kristi Ramsey named Navasota High School Principal” on page 3.

Board Elections

Navasota Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick announced that for the second-consecutive year Navasota ISD can cancel school elections. Amy Jarvis and Tim Harris are running unopposed. “I take that as a good sign that things are going well and the folks in the community have a confidence and appreciation in our board for the work they are doing,” explained Musick.

Musick stated another upside to being able to cancel the election is it saves approximately $30-40K between Grimes and Brazos County.

New menu items

Superintendent of Operations, Dr. Ronnie Gonzalez made stomachs growl when he announced Navasota High School added a wing bar to its daily serving line. Gonzalez said the wing bar features barbeque, hot buffalo, lemon pepper and garlic parmesan wings. In the first day 450 students were served wings with garlic parmesan being the favorite.

In addition to the wing bar, Gonzalez said the high school cafeteria has 10 selections available daily including burgers, chicken sandwiches, and a taco bar among others. The school also added a breakfast banana split to the menu which features a sliced banana with crushed pineapples, yogurt and granola. There is also a strawberry version.

The junior high also has a new serving line that was installed over the Christmas holiday that Gonzalez said is “FANG-TASTIC!”

Combating sickness

Sickness has taken its toll on many school districts with a couple in the county having to temporarily close. Gonzalez stated they are doing their best to combat the sickness by thorough and routine disinfecting. They are partnering with their cleaning service to disinfect schools on the weekend.

Goldstar Transit, the school’s transportation provider, is also disinfecting busses weekly. Gonzalez stated that disinfecting has been working and the district has maintained a steady attendance record between 92-95 percent.

Construction delays

Rain has put a damper on construction that is ongoing at Navasota Junior High and Navasota High School. The project manager for Berry and Clay, stated they are approximately a month behind of where they projected to be due to the rain but are working nights and weekends to make up for lost time.

Athletic project update

Musick stated the Navasota High School gym remodels will be pushed back. Construction is ongoing at the high school and the air conditioners will be off in the summer. The gym floor can’t be laid without climate-controlled temperatures.

Musick said Navasota Head Volleyball Coach Susan Foy is aware of the situation and understands the volleyball teams will likely play their home games at the junior high, which are on schedule to have the gym floors replaced over the summer.

Construction on the gyms at Navasota High School are projected to be complete six weeks after school resumes for the 2020-21 fall school year.

Action Items

The board approved a contract between NISD and Brazos Valley Regional Day School Program for the Deaf.

Musick said currently NISD doesn’t have any deaf students but does have one student that is blind, and the BV Regional Day School Program also covers students that are vision impaired. It is a yearly contract. The school will bill NISD if any students are sent to participate in the services.

Navasota’s next regularly scheduled board meeting is set for Monday, March 16.
