BRYAN- Two Navasota men were sentenced to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in separate incidents Monday, Sept.

30.

Gabriel Jones

Gabriel Janord Jones, 28, of Navasota was convicted by a Brazos County jury and sentenced to life in prison for brutally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in front of their child at her apartment in College Station in April 2016.

According to prosecutors Jones became enraged when the victim refused his sexual advances and stabbed her 15 times and slit her throat nearly killing her.

Prosecutors tried Jones for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon because they stated it carried a stiffer penalty than attempted murder. Previously, Jones had only been convicted of driving without a license and never been tried for a violent crime.

“We presented evidence in punishment that he had been abusive to a prior girlfriend,” explained district attorney Jessica Escue. “The victims had not had the courage or opportunity to outcry about what they were going through. Left unaddressed domestic violence often escalates.”

Jones was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

Gary Carey

Another Navasota man, Gary Carey, 54, received a six-year TDCJ sentence for stealing heavy equipment in Brazos County.

A Brazos County jury convicted Carey of theft $1,500-$20,000 Aug. 13. According to reports, in 2014 a Bryan resident reported that his tractor and trailer were stolen from property in Brazos County.

Investigators traced the transaction to a posting on Craigslist in which Carey sold the victim’s items to a Caldwell man. The buyer was able to identify him in a lineup and deputies were able to recover the stolen property.

The district attorney’s office reported this is the seventh time Carey has been convicted of stealing heavy equipment and vehicles. Because of Carey’s lengthy criminal history including 12 prior felonies in five different counties, prosecutors were able to triple the two-year sentence.

Carey’s previous convictions include forgery, theft and possession of a controlled substance.
