Navasota Independent School District began the first phase in a series of athletic renovations Monday, March 23.

On Aug. 25, 2019 the NISD Board of Directors unanimously approved a Maintenance Tax Note for athletic renovations. The renovations are separate from the $55 million bond project that was approved by voters in November 2017 that are currently ongoing.

The Maintenance Tax Note for athletic facilities includes replacing the turf, replacing the track, installing a new video scoreboard and sound system and repairing the elevator at Rattler Stadium.

Other upgrades include new gym floors at Rattler Gym, Navasota High School Auxiliary Gym (The Pit) and the seventh and eighth-grade gyms at Navasota Junior High. The improvements also include bleacher upgrades.

The construction of eight new tennis courts with lighting and bleachers will take place. Navasota’s baseball and softball fields will also receive artificial turf, new lighting, bleacher upgrades, concession and restroom upgrades, batting cage upgrades, and shade structures over the bleachers.

Rattler Stadium upgrades begin

Navasota ISD board members awarded Hellas Construction the contract to complete athletic projects at the football, baseball, softball and tennis facilities at a special board meeting Monday, March 2.

In a meeting Monday, March 16, board members approved alternate quotes from Hellas that included several upgrades totaling $7,074,568.00. The upgrades include a turf Infill that lowers the field turf temperature by at least 20-degrees, a mat under the turf that will last for 30-years, shade structures at the baseball and softball field, batting tunnels with a roof and lighting at the baseball and softball fields, logo designs at the tennis facility and many more.

Hellas began removing the track and turf at Rattler Stadium Monday, March 23. The existing scoreboard and sound system are being removed and replaced by a new video scoreboard and sound system from Daktronics.

Navasota Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick stated that because Hellas manufactures and installs their own turf they were able to begin renovating Rattler Stadium. Musick said the turf and scoreboard will be completed in time for graduation which is scheduled for May 29. The track may not be completed by then.

Calendar approved

Navasota ISD conducted a survey to see what calendar members of the community as well as faculty preferred. The board voted to approve Calendar C which also received the most votes from the community and faculty.

Teacher resignations

The board accepted the resignations of three staff members at the board meeting March 16. Resignations will be effective at the end of the school year and include Debra Marinelli (junior high), Brooke Bayliss (junior high counselor) and Karen Hanson (High Point counselor).

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Monday April 20.
