If you ever wondered what to do with a carcass, Navasota City Manager Brad Stafford discusses how to properly dispose of it in this edition of Grilling Stafford.

Navasota Examiner Publisher Ana Cosino and Willy 98.7 FM Radio Personality Kenny Graves ask the questions the community wants to know.

Highlights from Grilling Stafford – episode 71

When is the deadline to host a block party for National Night Out and who do you have to contact to host? “I don’t know if we have a true deadline except for the day of (Oct. 5), but it would be best if you let us know as soon as possible. They need to contact Marla Gurka at Navasota Police Department, 936-825- 6124 and tell her your address and what they are planning to do so we can make sure the officers and fire department come by and talk to you.”

Navasota is up for a Main Street Award. Can you explain that and tell us how we can vote to support Navasota? “Technically we are up for three awards but there is one that you get to vote on and that is the Main Street Award for Washington Avenue. You can go the City of Navasota Facebook page or website and there is a link. You can vote as many times as you would like. Please vote early and vote often. It would be nice to win that award. We get a little cash if we win, and it can be utilized for more beautification. The other two we are in the running for by Texas Downtown Association is for Railroad Street, as a Public Improvement Project award. We are a finalist. We find out if we win in October. The Pretty City Committee is up for an honor as well for the work they have done for beautification downtown. It would be nice to win all three and get more publicity for beautiful Navasota.”

The city recently announced a new dog park coming to August Horst Park, is there an opening date for that? “Not right now. Council approved it, but they approved it to be placed in the upcoming budget. So, that money has been placed into that budget to hopefully be adopted Monday night (Sept. 20), then the parks department can begin building. It shouldn’t take too long because there is not a lot of work to do.”

Leon at McAlpine the street has a big dip. I thought it was due to odd terrain, but someone said the dip was put there as a way to channel water. Is that true? If true, will this be done in future subdivisions? “That is true. It is built to channel water. It should not be done in future subdivisions, it should be underground in storm drains. That is what we have in the ordinance. There are a few locations where it has occurred in some new subdivisions, but the effort is being made to keep all that underground. It is safer to keep it underground because of standing water and deep water causes traffic hazards.”

It’s illegal to dispose of large dead animals such as a horse in the regular City landfill. The City’s website says a person must use a state approved sanitary landfill. If the City owns a sanitary landfill, where is it? If it doesn’t own one, do you know where one is located? The city does not own a landfill. We did many years ago, but it closed I believe in the early 1990’s. We utilize Twin Oaks Landfill on Highway 30 in Carlos. It is in Grimes County and is owned by Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management. If you need to dispose of something like that or anything else, you can dispose if it there. It costs but it is not very expensive. I know a lot of people have this idea that it is expensive to go to the landfi ll. It depends on how much weight you have and you are charged by the ton.”
