Whitehall News

I am passing the baking jobs down to my two grandchildren in Lyons. Bean won grand on his pecan pie with chocolate drizzle and Bree won second for her pineapple cake and third on her cookies at the Burleson County Fair last week. Maybe my “baker’s knee” can heal now. Their rabbits sold well too.

The trip to Caldwell for the Fair did not start out good but it sure ended differently. My family was always getting sidetracked with their friends, so I found some new friends. So, to my new buddies, see you next year!

In the event you have not heard, there is no winner yet at the Queen of Hearts game. Maybe Saturday there will be a very happy individual and some of us will have a free Saturday to go other places.

The dump in Whitehall will now open not only on Saturdays, 8 a.m. till 4 p.m. but will also begin opening Wednesdays 7 a.m. till 3 p.m. The notice indicated this is to assist with the crowding that occurs on Saturdays.

The Courtney-Whitehall 4H will meet for their monthly business meeting Sunday, Oct. 13, 6 p.m. at the Whitehall Community Center. The group will have a fundraiser Nov. 9 to include a cake sale at the Whitehall Store and a spaghetti lunch at the Community Center at the same time. Presale tickets will be available by calling a 4H member or at the Whitehall Store. I will have a price after their monthly meeting.

The most recent news on Charles Waters is that hospice has been called in and the family is accepting donations to help with the out-of-pocket expenses. If you are interested in helping, please contact Lynn Grove UMC.

The Whitehall community offers condolences this week as Suzie Vickers lost her mom and Mrs. Lillian Shimshack passed away. Please keep both these families in your prayers. As expected, the funeral was well attended and pastor Mayerhoff delivered a wonderful tribute to Mrs. Lillian.

Ms. Pauline still has a journey to wellness, but she keeps the faith and is very upbeat. We sure need her back at the domino table.

Disasters happen and as those tornadoes did several years ago, they come up fast. I did not even know we were in a tornado warning. I just knew the wind was very scary, especially when you have two little boys at your house. Are you prepared for a disaster or would you have to prepare in fear? Do you plan to shelter in place a plan? The Texas State Department of Health offers training and information. In addition, the Veterans of Foreign Wars 4006 Auxiliary could possibly accommodate your needs.

Football games occasionally occur between rival schools. Anderson-Shiro and Somerville are not what I would consider rivals, however, Bean and his buddy, Conner Daley, faced each other on the field. Conner is very fast, but Bean is very stout! I did catch them visiting on the field after the game and posing for a photo.

The only comment I have regarding the game is that the announcer was one-sided (for a while). He called the Owl roster and named the boys during the plays. In addition, he announced the business sponsors, not once, but twice and did the same with the cheerleaders. Once again, these are just junior high children not pro players yet, so why did he not announce the Yegua roster and why not mention those boys when they made a play? Well, it took one Somerville Grandma on a mission to clear this up. She went to the other side to the press box and questioned the announcer if he had a Somerville roster. When he said that he did, she asked why he failed to call the Yegua boys names. The announcer said he just got off work and chose not to name them, however he changed his tune for the second half. I have two additional comments for this, Somerville lost, and I was not that Grandma.
