Rattlers overall Mike Dacus Champions

Navasota ISD hosted the inaugural Mike Dacus Classic Thursday, Dec. 9 through Saturday, Dec. 11, with Navasota being named the overall champions.

The uniquely formatted tournament with five divisions allows school districts to bring their entire boys basketball programs from varsity through junior high. Navasota earned the overall team championship by earning the most points overall as a program.

Navasota’s freshman, junior varsity and seventh grade team’s each won first pace in their division. The Rattler varsity lost their first game to Giddings 48- 47, then reeled -off four consecutive wins to earn second place. They defeated La Grange 63-35, Cameron 90-86, and Bellville 63-51.

Cash Douglass led the Rattlers averaging 19 point-per-game (ppg), 3 assists and 3 steals. Ja’Mar Jessie averaged 11 ppg, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Kaddon Hubbard scored 7 ppg and 8 rebounds and John Lee contributed 9 ppg.

Navasota JV went 4-0 defeating Bellville 43-27, Madisonville 46-27, Giddings 60-22, and Sealy 39-31.

The Rattler freshman were also undefeated going 4-0. They beat Hempstead 66-20, Madisonville 48-28, Giddings 57-12, and Sealy 36-35.

Navasota’s seventh graders finished in first place with one loss (3- 1). They defeated Madisonville 20-19, Bellville 19-6, and Hearne 31-12. They dropped their final game to Franklin 34-26.

The eighth grade Fangs finished in fourth place going 2-2. They started with losses to Madisonville 36-17 and Bellville 26-25. The Fangs picked up wins over Bellville 19- 6 and Cameron 41-12.

Madisonville won the varsity division going 4-0 and SFA Middle School won the eighth-grade division.

Navasota’s high school teams play at Lorena Friday, Dec. 17, starting at 3 p.m. They travel to La Grange Monday, Dec. 20, beginning at 10:45 a.m. then play at Giddings Tuesday, Dec. 21, with tip-off slated for 10:30 a.m.

The junior high teams return to action Thursday, Jan. 6, when they host Mance Park Middle School (Huntsville) beginning at 5 p.m.
