Voyager 2 leaves the heliosphere, enters interstellar space

The twin exploration spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched 41 years ago in 1977.  On Dec. 10, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, announced that for the second time in history a man-made object, Voyager 2, has left the heliosphere and entered interstellar space.  Voyager 1 passed the milestone in 2012. The heliosphere is the volume over which the effects of the solar wind extend, a bubble.  The solar wind is charged particles and magnetic fields created by the sun.   The heliosphere shields the Earth and other bodies in the solar system from galactic cosmic rays.  The outer region of the heliosphere where the solar wind is compressed and turbulent is called the heliosheath.  The termination shock is where the solar wind slows abruptly due to the outside pressure of the interstellar medium.
