Smith Hotel brings new life to Railroad Street

Once upon a time, Railroad Street was teeming with life and the P.A. Smith Hotel was the jewel in its crown. The past few decades have not been kind to this historic street in Navasota, but that is about to change. Thanks to the vision of Old Washington residents Janice and Steve Scheve, the old P.A. Smith Hotel building will be transformed into the new Smith Hotel, reflecting the spirit of its predecessor but with modern day amenities.

Farewell to the pedal car, the Noto’s era

The Dec. 28 sale of Noto’s Home & Auto marks the “end of an era” in Navasota, Texas. Noto’s has been a part of the fabric of Navasota life since 1953, when Charles Noto opened his home-based small appliance shop in the 100 block of E. McAlpine. Relocating to 102 E. Washington in 1962, placed Noto’s in the “heart” of Navasota’s business district, in more ways than one.

Voyager 2 leaves the heliosphere, enters interstellar space

The twin exploration spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched 41 years ago in 1977.  On Dec. 10, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, announced that for the second time in history a man-made object, Voyager 2, has left the heliosphere and entered interstellar space.  Voyager 1 passed the milestone in 2012. The heliosphere is the volume over which the effects of the solar wind extend, a bubble.  The solar wind is charged particles and magnetic fields created by the sun.   The heliosphere shields the Earth and other bodies in the solar system from galactic cosmic rays.  The outer region of the heliosphere where the solar wind is compressed and turbulent is called the heliosheath.  The termination shock is where the solar wind slows abruptly due to the outside pressure of the interstellar medium.
