Competing in Vegas, Richards style

Grimes County was well represented at the Vegas Tuffest Jr. World Championship in Las Vegas. Competing were Tyler, Ta’Colton and Chesney Calhoun as well as Meredith and Bodie Wrobleski.

Highlights from the past week include: Ta’Colton Calhoun succeeded in winning the 12 and under Vegas Tuffest Jr. World Championship, bringing home a new trailer for a year, and over $13,000 in prize money. Tyler Calhoun brings home over $23,000 in prize money, while Meredith Wrobleski brings home over $17,000 in prize money and a new truck. Her brother Bodie Wrobleski placed fifth roping in the Junior World Finals.

All living between Anderson and Richards, these kids went to Vegas and left it all in the arena. Through hard work and dedication, they make Grimes County proud to be one of the many counties in Texas that continue to raise true cowboys and cowgirls.

Saturday, Dec. 18, Richards will host its annual Christmas parade beginning at 2 p.m. Parade lineup starts at 1:15 p.m. in the RISD parking lot. Richards Volunteer Fire Department will serve dinner following the parade including BBQ sandwiches, sausage on the stick and drinks. Richards 4-H will help serve the meal, between 11 a.m. -1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Also, on Saturday, Dec. 18, Wreaths Across America will be at Oakland Cemetery in Navasota for the inaugural wreath laying ceremony. Wreaths will be placed on graves of veterans throughout the county. A total of 220 wreaths have been sponsored by groups such as the Grimes County Historical Commission, Robert Raines Chapter, Pocahontas Society, VFW Post 4006, American Legion and more.

Richards Civic Club has begun planning for projects in 2022 including building an awning over the front porch area of the Civic Club building, continued food distribution through the food program and potential planning for Founders Day in Richards again! The Civic Club food program continues to prove that the service is much needed in our area with the program now feeding 20 families. Throughout the year this group has gone from merely hosting meetings to providing community gatherings, assistance programs, and working on projects that revitalize the look of our small town.

Jan. 10, 2022 Grimes County Historical Commission will host Herb Johnson and other council members from the Alabama Coushatta tribe in East Texas. The group will present various craft items and other artifacts as well as information on Native Americans in and around Grimes County, and how Native Americans helped establish Texas. The event will start at 6 p.m. at the Grimes County Courthouse, in the second-floor courtroom.
