Grimes County Senior Center is hosting their annual hot dog lunch and raffle fundraiser Wednesday, Aug. 9. A hot dog lunch with condiments, bag of chips, soft drink or water and dessert is $10. For $12, you can get all of the above with two hot dogs. This fundraiser helps keep the center running and supplies for meals. It’s important we support this center to give our elderly a place to congregate and have fellowship. Raffle tickets are $1 each or a book of six tickets for $5. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the center, 936-873-2818.

Knights of Columbus Council #4054 will hold another blood drive Sunday, Aug. 20 at the St. Stanislaus Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Please register at www.commitforlife.org and enter code STKR.

Don and I just returned from the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas 145th Annual Training Conference & Expo held in Fort Worth this year. Every year we have attended this conference, we have always taken kids, grandkids or both. This year we decided to take a break and just attend ourselves. It was nice for a change, but I sure missed my little grandkids.

At one of the Ladies Luncheons, we played purse bingo. This year’s board of director’s wives got 20 high dollar and name brand purses donated for the event. I was lucky enough to win a $295 black Coach purse. I was excited because I would not and will never spend that much on a purse.

That same evening we went to a Vendor’s (Invitation Only) dinner at Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant where we were surprised with a special guest. Randy White, who played with the Dallas Cowboys from 19751988 under Coach Tom Landry, blessed us with his presence. Randy (#54) was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He spoke to us a bit then opened the floor up for questions. At the end of the evening, he gave away 8-9 door prizes including autographed pictures, footballs, helmets and a jersey. The door prizes were only available to Sheriff’s in attendance. The last number called was Don’s. He won an autographed helmet. That was pretty exciting. On the way back to the hotel, I told him we needed to stop and get a lotto ticket since we both hit it lucky that day.

While in Fort Worth, we were saddened by the news of the passing of Elizabeth Nowak. Elizabeth was one of the first women I met when I moved to Anderson. She attended St. Stanislaus as did I. She reminded me so much of my mother because they had a lot of the same morals, values and traits. They were both devout Catholics, always dressed to a tee, both had osteoporosis and were the sweetest and kindest ladies I knew. She will be dearly missed by so many.
