Martin Luther King Jr., a social activist and Baptist minister played a key role in American civil rights through peaceful protests. He was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

In 1964 King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and since 1986, he is remembered each year with a U.S. federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. King may be best remembered for his “I Have a Dream” speech.

Navasota will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a parade Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. The parade will begin on Brosig Avenue by Brule Elementary. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade is asked to begin lining up at 9 a.m.

Following the parade, a memorial program will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 1111 S. La Salle Street in Navasota. The keynote address will be presented by Pastor Harvey Walker of Crossing Community Church in Houston.
