The State Board of Education (SBOE) member representing Grimes County, Dr. Audrey Young, provided an education bill update at the Grimes County Republican Party monthly meeting Monday, June 5.

With the Regular Texas 88th Legislative Session over and several Special Sessions looming ahead, Young provided updates on several bills which did pass. Those included HB 900 related to library standards and HB 1605 which restores oversight of textbooks to the SBOE. Young explained that legislation passed in 2011 allowed publishers to bypass the SBOE review of textbooks putting review in the hands of local school boards.

Young urged her constituents to apply for a Texas Education Agency (TEA) workgroup position to review the TEKS. Texas educators with both general and Special Education background were encouraged to apply to the TEA to provide feedback on the state assessments STAAR, STAAR Alternate 2 and TELPAS.

Young is in her second term serving the 10 counties in SBOE District 8 and its 1.9 million constituents. Young brings a rich Special Education background to the SBOE and she currently serves as chair of the Committee on Instruction – which includes Library Standards.
