Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) gave the Grimes County Go Texan a $250 county scholarship 38 years ago launching the existence of GC Go Texan. Now, the HLSR give the applicant that qualifies a $20,000 scholarship and the local Grimes County Go Texan Committee gives additional scholarships to local seniors that apply and qualify.

In 2019, the Grimes County Go Texan Committee gave over $52,000 in scholarships to 26 qualifying students, which does not include the $20,000 given by HLSR to a qualifying senior of Grimes County. This year the committee anticipates giving that much or more to qualifying applicants. Over the past 38 years Grimes County Go Texan has given over $770,800 to qualifying senior applicants. In the history of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, over $675 million dollars have been given in scholarships by HLSR.

The Grimes County Go Texan Committee consists of the following members: Gary Moriarity, Ambassador; Stacey Ross, Treasurer; Molly Hurst, Secretary; Donna Gessner, Danny Clark, David Dobyanski, Randy Duke, Eddie Eppler, Cary Hackler, Larry Harvey, Tammy Harvey, Roy Henderson, Lee Igo, Angie Imhoff, Pierce Key, Randy Krueger, Michele McNew, Ricky Schroeder, Chris Tagudin, Carla Bosse, Jordan Hargrove, and Ken Mock.

The committee works hard as a team to raise funds to assist the youth of Grimes County through scholarships and donations to local youth group organizations and other organizations such as NISD Foundation, ASISD Foundation, Special Olympics, Grimes County Expo Center Pee Wee Activities, Ag Mechanics and the Grimes County Little League. In 2019 the committee donated over $6,000 to these organizations.

The annual Grimes County Go Texan weekend is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 24-26. There will be 68 barbeque teams participating for first, second, and third place in County and Open Brisket, Chicken, and Ribs, as well as, the Jack Pot Chili and Bloody Mary Contest.

Friday night’s dance will feature Jim Sloan and the Allstars. The mini auction begins at approximately 10 p.m. Admission to the dance will be $10.00 per person.

Saturday night will feature Kevin Robinson. Admission to the dance will be $10.00 per person. There will be a $10.00 entry charge starting at 5 p.m. Saturday until midnight. The entry fee will get you into the dance and activities in the team area. The only entry during this time will be the main hall entrance doors and the main gate next to the main hall.

Come out and enjoy the Go Texan weekend in Navasota and help support the Youth of Grimes County. Admission to the grounds is free of charge until 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. There will be local vendors and food vendors.
