Multiple candidates seeking positions in Grimes County

ANDERSON- The Dec. 9 filing deadline has come and gone for candidates to file for election in the 2020 Primaries.

Locally four positions will have multiple candidates including the position of Grimes County Sheriff, currently held by Donald G. Sowell. Sowell will be opposed by Travis Higginbotham. The position is for a 4-year term and both candidates are running under the Republican Party.

Two Grimes County Commissioner positions with 4-year terms are also up for re-election for Precinct 1 and Precinct 3. Chad Mallett, the current Precinct 1 Commissioner is seeking re-election opposed by another Republican, candidate Randall Griffin.

In Pct. 3, a pair of Democratic Party members are vying for the position of Commissioner. Current Precinct 3 Commissioner Barbara Walker is opposed by candidate Michael Raska.

The final position up for grabs in Grimes County is that of Constable Precinct 3 currently held by Wes Male. Male will be opposed by fellow Republican Preston Goode. That position is also a 4-year term.

Three positions in Grimes County are up for re-election but no candidates filed to challenge the current Incumbents. Those positions are Grimes County Tax Assessor-Collector held by Mary Ann Waters which is a 4-year term, Grimes County Constable Precinct 1 a 4-year term held by Dale Schaper and Constable Precinct 2 held by Blake Jarvis also a 4-year term.

The final day to register to vote in the 2020 Primaries is Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. Early voting begins Feb. 18 and runs through Feb. 28, 2020, at the Grimes County Courthouse, 100 Main Street in Anderson and at the Navasota Center, 101 Stadium Drive in Navasota.

Final day to vote is the date of the actual election March 3, 2020.
