RICHARDS – Overwhelming support from voters helped Richards Independent School District pass a $6.9 million bond in May 2021. Now the community is beginning to see the fruits of the bond.

There are two major projects that are nearing completion. A bus barn, approximately 85x50 feet, has been constructed to house school transportation. The barn is an open canopy format and according to RISD Superintendent William Boyce is about 95% complete.

In addition, the bond is addressing parking issues. A new gravel surface parking lot has been constructed on the east side of the previous student parking lot.

The shell of the new Ag shop (175’ x 45’) has been erected. Once complete, it will include a woodshop, classrooms and bathrooms. Boyce stated students are helping to finish the interior of the building assisting with framing, plumbing, sheetrock, basic electrical, cabinetry and finish work. “This gives them important real-world knowledge that can help them at home or in the workforce,” he explained. Currently the building is approximately 80% complete, but it is anticipated to be completed in the fall.

A massive 8’ deep hole has been excavated on the west side of the school to lay the foundation for new classrooms, bathrooms and a gymnasium. Excavation on the east side will commence for new classrooms and bathrooms.

Renovations to the existing school building have been put on hold due to material shortages and logistics of some building materials. The work has been rescheduled for June 2023. Projects in the renovation include asbestos abatement, new light fixtures, painting, new carpet and switching the elementary and high school wings. These projects are projected for completion Aug. 2023.

Let there be light

The Panther baseball team will soon be able to host nighttime baseball. New construction meant the field had to be relocated further toward FM 149. For the first time, the field will have lights. In addition to lighting, the field will have new fencing, new sod and a sprinkler system. The ballpark is expecting the new installations over the summer.

Boyce stated so far everything is going as planned and projects are staying within budget. “We’d like to thank parents and community members for their support and bearing with us during the construction process,” stated Boyce. “Cross our fingers we continue to have great weather.”
