There were numerous junior deputies in town Thursday. Grimes County Pct. 2 Constable Blake Jarvis and district attorney Investigator John Wren visited Richards Elementary. They presented to students in prekindergarten through second grade what police officers do to serve the community. Posted near this column is a picture that appears of students patiently waiting to answer questions. Each Participating student was pinned with a junior deputy badge. This is just one of the many ways our Grimes County Sheriff’s Department reaches out to children in and around our community. A special thanks to Grimes County Sheriff’s Department and all law enforcement for all that you do for our community daily.

The “Fifth Sunday Singing” at Union Grove Baptist Church will be even more special Sunday, Sept. 29,. There will be a very special gathering to honor and celebrate the retirement of Bobby Montgomery. It will begin at 4 p.m. and refreshments and homemade ice cream will follow. Bobby has been choir director for many years and a very good one indeed. Come join them for the fun.

Welcome home Jake Mc-Clellan. Jake is home on leave from the Army. His Mother Joyce McClellan is so excited to have him home for a while. Joyce said her entire family was able to attend church Sunday together. For those of us with big families and older children know what a blessing that is.

Garrett Smith and his mother Rosemary traveled from College Station Sunday to attend church near Huntsville where Payton Igo Pastors. Garrett’s mother traveled from College Station which is a very long way to travel to church, but Garrett traveled even further as he had just gotten home the day before. Garrett is a Marine and was on leave and traveled many miles away from where he was stationed. Payton was surprised and honored to have him visit. After church several young adults and friends along with some older adults enjoyed dinner at City Hall Cafe in Huntsville. It was a fun celebration and so good to see and visit with lots of good friends.

We thank both young men for serving our country as well as any other soldiers that may be reading this. They are very special and are our Heroes!

Perhaps you have a friend, son, daughter, or loved one serving in the service and maybe they get to come home for a few days. Be sure and email me and I’ll add the information to the column, so all your friends know your soldier is home.

This has been a very busy time with schools starting back up. Those who have children and grandchildren in sports and other school activities may be burning the candle at both ends.

Lee and I have been busy trying to watch grandchildren. Faith was a cheerleader at the Homecoming for the Owls. The following night Mattie Mae was in a Lil Diggers game for the Navasota Rattlers. Micah will be playing volleyball tomorrow in College Station. Johanna is playing volleyball, and Jeremiah has a game Friday.

Please keep Marie Tomkivits, Tere Phelps, our President, and our country in your prayers.
