Anderson-Shiro’s Brant Warner wrestles a Newton player to the ground in the Owls road loss in deep East Texas.

NEWTON — The young Anderson-Shiro Fighting Owls faced the No. 3 ranked Newton Eagles Friday, Sept. 30, in deep East Texas. The Eagles won 69-0.

The Eagles came into the game highly touted and were even better than advertised. The young Owl team fought valiantly through the entire game. Junior Owl running back Jarvis Haynes averaged four yards per carry with 80 yards on the night. Defensively, junior William Bagley led the charge with seven tackles followed closely by Sophomore Kagan Stephens with five tackles. Stephens also had a catch for 9 yards and 47 return yards.

There were many lessons learned in facing such an experienced, highly touted, and veteran laden opponent. The most glaring is that this team did not give up and fought despite the mounting odds against them.

The Owls return home this week to face the New Waverly Bulldogs. The Owls will be looking to snap back into the win column at home. Owl Coach Brad Hodges stated, “We face a talented New Waverly squad this week. Our week will center around bouncing back. We will continue to build on the effort we saw last week. That was an encouraging positive for us. Our kids never quit! We are looking forward to being in the friendly confi nes of Owl Stadium.”

The Owls and Bulldogs kick off at 7 p.m. in Anderson. If you cannot attend the game, please follow along at “Examiner Sports” on Facebook for game updates, pictures and videos of all your Grimes County football games!
